A simple, equal-parts herbal salve made with calendula, dandelion, frankincense resin, rose, cocoa butter, and beeswax.

A gentle, all-purpose herbal remedy for everyday family care, Mom’s Helping Salve is a must-have in our home and in my families’ homes. Every day comes with its little adventures and minor mishaps, and this indispensable, multi-purpose soothing balm is designed to keep close by for a wide array of first-aid needs.

  • Diaper rash and minor skin irritations

  • Scrapes, minor cuts, and everyday “boo-boos”

  • Minor burns and sunburns

  • Dry, chapped, or rough skin patches

  • Soothing support for contact dermatitis and eczema-prone skin

This formula uses equal parts of six ingredients, making it wonderfully easy to scale. The infused oils bring the character of each herb into the blend, while cocoa butter and beeswax give the salve its firm, creamy texture and help it stay shelf-stable and travel-friendly.

Why These Ingredients Work Beautifully Together

Calendula Infused Oil

Calendula is one of the most beloved herbs for topical skin care. Traditionally used for irritated, dry, or tender skin, calendula is valued for its gentle, soothing nature. Calendula helps calm redness, inflammation, and discomfort while encouraging healthy skin recovery. In a salve, calendula infused oil helps create a comforting base for skin that needs extra care, especially when paired with protective butters and waxes.

Dandelion Infused Oil

Dandelion infused oil brings a sunny, resilient energy to this formula. Herbalists often reach for dandelion flower preparations for hardworking hands, rough skin, and areas that feel dry or overused. Rich in antioxidants and deeply restorative, dandelion infusion helps soothe sore, dry, or irritated skin and supports natural skin repair.  Its softening quality makes it a lovely companion to calendula in an everyday salve.

Frankincense Resin Infused Oil

Frankincense resin adds depth to both the aroma and the skin-feel of this salve. Treasured for centuries for skin rejuvenation, frankincense provides comforting properties, helps calm the appearance of inflamed tissue, and supports gentle skin recovery. Frereana and Carteri resins are prized in natural skin care for their warm, resinous scent and their traditional use in calming, grounding preparations. Infusing the resin into oil allows its aromatic character to blend gently into the finished balm without the intensity of essential oil.

I buy all my resins from Robin B. Kessler CA she is an aromatherapist and expert on resins. I am not an affiliate but she is a friend and trusted colleague of mine.

Rose Infused Oil

Rose infused oil gives the formula a soft, nurturing quality. Rose is often associated with delicate, dry, or mature skin and lends a subtle floral note when infused into oil. Gentle and comforting, rose oil cools mild heat (like sunburns), deeply hydrates, and adds a soft, nourishing touch suitable for sensitive skin. In this salve, it rounds out the stronger herbal and resinous ingredients with a gentle, luxurious finish.

Unrefined Cocoa Butter

Unrefined cocoa butter gives the salve body, richness, and a naturally chocolatey aroma.  Provides a rich, protective moisture barrier that seals in hydration and protects compromised skin from further friction or moisture loss, while adding a subtle, natural aroma. It melts beautifully on contact with warm skin and helps soften dry areas while leaving behind a protective feel. Because it is firm at room temperature, cocoa butter also helps the salve hold its shape in tins or jars.

Beeswax

Beeswax is what transforms infused oils and cocoa butter into a practical, portable salve. It gives the salve its smooth, firm texture while acting as a breathable, water-resistant shield to help protect delicate skin from moisture buildup, making it especially helpful for diaper area care. This gentle barrier helps lock in moisture and makes the salve useful for hands, elbows, heels, and other dry spots.

Formula & Supplies

Use equal parts of each ingredient:

  • 1 part Calendula infused oil

  • 1 part Dandelion infused oil

  • 1 part Frankincense resin infused oil, using Frereana or Carteri resin

  • 1 part Rose infused oil

  • 1 part Unrefined cocoa butter

  • 1 part Beeswax

Containers: Clean, sanitized 1 oz. or 2 oz. tins or glass jars.

Scaling note: Because this recipe uses equal parts of all six ingredients, you can easily scale your batch size up or down. For example, use 1 tablespoon of each ingredient for a small test batch, or 1/4 cup of each ingredient for a larger batch.

Preparation note: The calendula, dandelion, frankincense resin, and rose oils should be infused separately before formulating this salve.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Set up the double boiler. Prepare a double boiler setup, or place a heat-safe glass bowl over a pot of gently simmering water.

  2. Combine ingredients. Add equal parts of the four infused oils, unrefined cocoa butter, and beeswax into the double boiler.

  3. Melt and integrate. Gently warm the mixture until the cocoa butter and beeswax are completely melted. Once fully melted, keep the mixture on low heat and stir continuously for an additional 2 minutes to ensure all ingredients are fully integrated.

  4. Pour. Carefully pour the liquid salve into clean, sanitized 1 oz or 2 oz containers.

  5. Cool and seal. Allow the salve to sit completely undisturbed at room temperature until fully cooled and solidified. Do not close or move the containers while cooling, as this helps prevent condensation from forming inside the jars.

  6. Cap, label, and store. Once set, cap your containers, label them clearly, and place one in your first-aid cabinet, diaper bag, or purse for easy access whenever life happens.

How to Use the Salve

Apply a small amount to clean, dry skin as needed. A little goes a long way: warm the salve between your fingertips, then smooth it over dry hands, rough elbows, chapped areas, or minor everyday skin irritations. Avoid applying to deep wounds, active infections, or any area that needs medical attention.

Storage and Shelf Life

Store the finished salve in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Use clean, dry hands or a small cosmetic spatula when dipping into jars to help keep the product fresh. The shelf life depends on the freshness of your infused oils and ingredients, so label each container with the date made and use your best judgment if the scent, color, or texture changes.

A Gentle Safety Note

This salve is intended for external use only. Patch test before wider use, especially on sensitive skin or when using with children. Avoid use if you are allergic or sensitive to any ingredient, including plants in the Asteraceae family such as calendula or dandelion. This recipe is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease, and it should not replace professional medical care.
