Overview

Curb the Urge is a formula for an Aromatherapy Inhaler that can support your goal of stopping smoking!

I carefully selected and created a blend of essential oils recognized for their emotional, energetic, and physiological advantages. Each oil is chosen for its distinct properties to help you manage cravings, enhance your emotional well-being, and aid in quitting smoking.

Why These Essential Oils?

Lemon (Citrus limon) – Top Note, Fresh Fruit Rind

  • Emotional/Energetic Qualities: Uplifting and cleansing. Lemon oil expands energy, promotes a sense of opening, reduces tension and depression, and invites happy, outward energy.

  • Scientific Support: The inhalation of d-limonene (found in lemon oil) has anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) effects (Lima et al., 2012), and lemon essential oil can decrease both physical and psychological stress (Fukumoto et al., 2007).

  • Aroma: Fresh, sharp citrus top note with sweet, fresh lemony notes.

Black Pepper (Piper nigrum) – Middle Note, Dried Fruit

  • Emotional/Energetic Qualities: Reduces fear, motivates change, offers protection from negative energy, helps release blocked energy, and alleviates fatigue, depression, and low energy.

  • Smoking Cessation: Evidence supports the use of Black Pepper in reducing cigarette cravings (Kitikannakorn et al., 2013). Its inhalation stimulates respiratory tract sensations, which play a role in alleviating smoking-withdrawal symptoms (Purchon & Cantele, 2014).

  • Aroma: Fresh, dry, warm, spicy, and woody.

Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum) – Middle Note, Seed

  • Emotional/Energetic Qualities: Refreshing and invigorating, cardamom balances energy, invites mental clarity, and helps those who worry excessively.

  • Cognitive Benefits: Contains 1,8-cineole, which promotes alertness and improves cognitive function (Moss & Oliver, 2012), making it ideal for clearing the head and aiding mental concentration.

  • Aroma: Warm and spicy, with a fresh, slightly camphoraceous, eucalyptus-like note.

Cedarwood (Juniperus virginiana) – Base Note, Wood

  • Emotional/Energetic Qualities: Increases endurance during difficult times, supports confidence in challenging situations, and provides grounding.

  • Calming Effects: Cedrol (found in cedarwood oil) has sedative effects that do not require the sense of smell, indicating a direct pharmacological action (Kagawa et al., 2003).

  • Aroma: Mild, dry, light, and fresh, with resinous, balsamic, and earthy notes reminiscent of pencil shavings.

The Importance of Plant Parts in This Blend

Plants and their components possess distinct energies and characteristics. I enjoy examining emotional support blends and observing how the energetics of these components affect my blend.

  • Fruits: With uplifting and cleansing properties, fruits symbolize protection and nurturing. Fruit-based oils provide vital support during the detoxification process and the breaking of old habits.

  • Seeds: As symbols of new beginnings, seeds facilitate new growth while letting go of old, unhealthy habits.

  • Wood: The wood or trunk of a tree transports water and nutrients, aiding in centering and stability, which is essential during periods of change.

Assemble Your Inhaler

How to create your own Curb the Urge aromatherapy inhaler, you'll need the following components:

  • A blank inhaler kit: This will include the tube, wick, base, and lid.

  • 4 drops of Lemon essential oil

  • 4 drops of Black Pepper essential oil

  • 3 drops of Cardamom essential oil

  • 4 drops of Cedarwood essential oil

Add the specified essential oil drops to the cotton wick. For precision, it is advisable to use a glass bowl and tweezers during this step. Make sure the cotton wick fully absorbs all the essential oils by checking the bottom of the bowl. With tweezers, gently place the saturated wick into the empty inhaler and seal it tightly. Once the cap is securely fastened, attach a suitable label.

How to Use the Aromatherapy Inhaler I Created

The Curb the Urge Aromatherapy Inhaler is designed to be used whenever cravings or moments of stress arise. Simply uncap the inhaler and breathe in the blend deeply, allowing the combined aromas and benefits of these essential oils to support your journey to quit smoking. Here are detailed instructions on how to use this aromatherapy inhaler:

  • To harness the full potential of the Curb the Urge Aromatherapy Inhaler, keep it within easy reach throughout your day. When you notice a craving or feel emotional tension building, remove the cap and take several slow, deep breaths through your nose, allowing the blend of essential oils to work both physically and emotionally. Allow yourself a moment to pause and focus on the sensations and subtle shifts in your mood or cravings, then recap the inhaler for future use.

  • If you are missing the oral stimulation of inhaling through the mouth you can use this method to use the inhaler. To replace the oral stimulation, place the inhaler in your mouth and inhale it this way. This mindful approach helps reinforce your intention to quit smoking, supporting your commitment and easing the process as you move toward a healthier lifestyle.

Essential Safety Precautions to Follow

  • Avoid Direct Contact: Essential oils should not touch your skin or mucus membranes without proper dilution.

  • Check for Allergies: Perform a patch test with new essential oils to ensure you are not sensitive to them. To do this add a drop of essential oil to a small amount of carrier oil  and apply to skin at the inner elbow, watch for signs of irritation, itchiness, redness,   inflammation etc.

  • If any sensory or tissue irritations develop (coughing, rhinitis, eye irritation, phlegm, hoarseness, headache, fatigue) while using the inhaler discontinue use immediately.

  • Use Responsibly: If pregnant, nursing, or under medical care, consult a healthcare professional before using essential oils.

Summary

Curb the Urge Aromatherapy Inhaler uses a carefully selected blend of Lemon, Black Pepper, Cardamom, and Cedarwood essential oils—each chosen for their supportive emotional and physiological effects in smoking cessation. The synergy of fruit, seed, and wood oils offers uplifting energy, new beginnings, and grounding, all essential for overcoming cravings and building a healthier lifestyle.
