Rich, Warming, and Functional Homemade Cacoa Blend
Why Hot Cacao Feels Like a Treat
Not only has hot cacao been cherished for centuries as a comforting beverage, hot cacao stands out as a special treat because it combines indulgent flavors with nostalgic memories. The sweet, chocolatey taste paired with creamy milk (or milk alternatives) delivers a sense of luxury. For many, hot cacao is associated with positive childhood experiences—such as holidays, snow days, or family gatherings—which enhances its emotional appeal. Toppings like whipped cream, marshmallows, or a sprinkle of cinnamon add a playful and decadent element, turning a simple drink into a delightful occasion.
The Warming Effect
Few beverages are as effective at warming you from the inside out as hot cacao. The heat of the drink helps raise your body temperature, offering immediate relief from cold weather. The creamy texture of hot cacao feels rich and enveloping, making it particularly satisfying when seeking comfort after being outdoors or during winter months. In many cultures, hot cacao is a traditional remedy for warming up after exposure to the cold.
The Benefits of Warming Spices
Adding warming spices—such as cinnamon, ginger, and cayenne pepper to hot cacao not only enhances its flavor but also provides additional benefits. These spices are known for their ability to promote circulation and gently raise the body's internal temperature, further amplifying cacao's comforting and warming effects. Many warming spices have natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which can support overall wellness and boost the immune system. The aromatic qualities of these spices also contribute to a cozy, inviting experience, making each sip of spiced hot cacao even more satisfying during colder months.
Now to The Recipe for Herbal Hot Cacao Mix
My recipe is inspired by Heidi Villegas at Healing Harvest Homestead SOBAS and the traditional recipe.
Ingredients
1 ¼ cups instant non-fat dry milk (or powdered milk alternative)
1 to 1 ½ cup of cacao powder (depending on how much chocolate flavor you want)
1 cup organic sugar (I like it powdered)
½ teaspoon salt
1 ½ to 2 teaspoons cinnamon powder (adjust to taste)
1 teaspoon ginger powder (adjust to taste)
Cayenne pepper powder (adjust to taste)
Instructions
In a large bowl, combine the dry milk, cacao powder, powdered sugar, and salt by sifting them together. Alternatively, you can place the ingredients in a blender and let it mix them for you which requires not sifting.
Stir in cinnamon, ginger, and cayenne powder. Adjust the spice quantities to suit your taste.
Mix in any of the suggested spices or optional blend according to your preference.
Store the mix in an airtight container.
To serve: Add 2-3 tablespoons of mix to a mug of hot water, milk (can use a milk alternative) or a combination of water and milk (can use a milk alternative). Stir well and enjoy!
Tips
The hot cacao mix may be prepared without spices and customized for each serving as desired. I just measure the spices with my heart.
Stir thoroughly to ensure a smooth, creamy texture.
Customize your cacao by topping it with whipped cream, marshmallows, or a dusting of spice.
Enjoy your hot cacao slowly, savoring the aroma and warmth as you unwind.
