A Personal Journey of Loss and Natural Support

I haven’t written anything for a while, this past month has been difficult dealing with my Mom’s declining health, then and still grieving the loss of my mom has been incredibly difficult. The pain feels overwhelming at times, and I am missing her presence in my life. Navigating through this grief is a daily challenge, but I try to honor her memory and hold onto the love we shared.

Understanding Grief and Its Impact

When we lose someone as close as a parent, the emotional impact can be profound. Grief isn’t just sadness; it’s a mix of longing, confusion, loneliness, and sometimes even physical symptoms like fatigue or trouble sleeping. Everyone’s journey through grief is unique, but many people look for ways to soothe the pain and find comfort.

The Role of Herbs in Supporting Grief

Throughout history, herbs have been used as natural remedies to support emotional and physical well-being during times of loss. While they can’t take away the pain or replace the person we miss, certain herbs may help ease some of the symptoms of grief and provide gentle support. Here are a few herbs commonly recognized for their benefits:

Herbs for Emotional Support During Grief

Hawthorn (Crataegus spp.) : The Heart’s Protector

Hawthorn is renowned for its ability to support both physical and emotional heart health. Its berries, flowers, and leaves are used to nourish and strengthen the heart, helping to ease emotional pain and promote resilience. Hawthorn gently opens the heart, encouraging feelings of compassion and acceptance during difficult times.

Mimosa (Albizia julibrissin): The Tree of Happiness

Mimosa bark, often called the “tree of happiness,” is valued in traditional medicine for its uplifting properties. It can help lift the heaviness of grief, soothe sadness, and promote emotional balance. Mimosa’s calming energy makes it a comforting companion when processing loss and finding hope again.

Rose (Rosa spp.): The Flower of Love and Healing

Rose petals are symbols of love and healing. Their gentle aroma and soothing qualities are known to calm the nervous system, nurture the heart, and support emotional release. Roses encourage self-compassion and can help mend the wounds of grief, offering a sense of comfort and peace.

Gentle Herbs for Calming and Comfort

Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla):

Known for its calming properties, chamomile can help reduce anxiety and promote better sleep. A warm cup of chamomile tea in the evening may offer comfort when emotions feel especially raw.

Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis):

This herb is often used to uplift mood and ease stress. Its gentle scent and flavor can provide a soothing touch during difficult moments.

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia):

Lavender is renowned for its ability to relax the mind and body. Using lavender oil in a diffuser or adding dried lavender to a bath can create a peaceful environment, helping to alleviate tension.

Holy Basil AKA Tulsi (Ocimum tenuiflorum):

Considered a sacred herb in many traditions, holy basil supports emotional balance and resilience. Sipping tulsi tea may help restore a sense of calm and clarity.

Why Herbs Are Helpful During Grief

Herbs offer gentle, natural support that can complement other methods of coping, such as talking with friends, joining a support group, or practicing mindfulness. Their soothing qualities help nurture the body and mind, often making it easier to rest, relax, and process emotions. By incorporating herbal remedies into your routine, you are not only caring for yourself but also honoring the memory of your loved one by choosing healing practices that nurture your well-being.

Safety Considerations When Using Herbs

While herbs can provide comforting support during grief, it is important to be mindful of potential safety concerns. Some herbs may interact with medications, cause allergic reactions, or be unsuitable for certain health conditions. If you are pregnant, nursing, or have underlying health issues, consult with a healthcare provider before using herbal remedies. Always start with small amounts and observe how your body responds, and avoid self-prescribing if you are unsure about an herb’s effects.

Honoring My Mom Through Healing Rituals

As I continue to navigate grief, I find moments of solace in simple rituals—reading the Bible, preparing a calming herbal tea, or spending quiet time in nature. I am going to continue my watercolor painting journey, it will be even more special now. My Mom told me how proud she was of me for following this path.

These acts remind me of my mom’s nurturing spirit and help keep her memory alive. Herbs are a meaningful addition to these rituals for me because she loved holistic medicine and was a student of natural health, they offer comfort and connection when words fall short.

My Mom loved her family strong, was a woman of faith and the best cheerleader in our lives. Love you Mom

If you’re grieving, know that you’re not alone. It’s okay to seek support and try different ways to heal. Whether through herbs, shared memories, or gentle self-care, every step you take honors the love you carry and helps you move forward, one day at a time.
